THE 12th INTERNATIONAL TAIPEI  CHOPIN PIANO COMPETITION

SEPTEMBER 3-21 2008

 

The International Taipei Chopin Piano Competition is the leading music competition in Taiwan. It has been organized by The Frederic Chopin Foundation of Taipei since 1985. The 12th International Taipei Chopin Piano Competition (with two age categories) will be held in Taipei, Taiwan on September 3-21, 2008.

I. TIMETABLE

First Round:   September 3-7, 2008 10:00-12:00 13:00-17:30 19:00-21.30

The First Prize winners (both age categories) will be invited to play 3 concerts in Taiwan, (1 solo recital and 2 with orchestra) within 8 months after the competition.

II. VENUES
The National Concert Hall and The National Recital Hall will be used for the Competition for both age categories. The NCH and NRH are located at 21-1, Chung Shan S. Rd., Taipei.

First Rounds:          Taipei National University of the Arts Concert Hall
Second Round :      National Recital Hall
Final Round:           National Concert Hall

III. CONDITIONS FOR ADMISSION

AGE
The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities and sex. It has two age categories:
(1) Adult category:
Born after September 1, 1981 and before August 31, 1992
(2) Youth category:
Born after September 1, 1992 and before August 31, 1999

APPLICATIONS
Application forms must be submitted by registered mail and postmarked no later than April 1, 2008, to the Competition Committee, c/o The Frederic Chopin Foundation of Taipei, #449 11F Jen Ai Road, Sec. 4, Taipei 106, Taiwan. Application forms sent by e-mail or fax will not be accepted.

Applications must include:
1. A correctly completed and signed application form. The application forms may be obtained from the following sources:

- The Frederic Chopin Foundation of Taipei
-  Music departments of various universities and music high schools in Taiwan and overseas
-  Cultural centers of different regions in Taiwan
- Taipei Representative Offices in foreign countries
- Chopin Societies of various foreign countries

2. A copy of the applicant's Passport or Birth Certificate
3. Three copyright-free photos (taken within three months before the date of application), measuring at least 5x7 cm, with the names of the contestant on the back

4. Application fee of NTD 4,000 or USD 120 in certified Bank Check or Money Order payable to The Frederic Chopin Foundation of Taipei. As an alternative, this fee may be wired directly to:

5. A recommendation letter from a renowned reputable musician or from the institution attended by the applicant at the time of application
6. A short CV with details of the applicant's music studies and major concerts

 

IV. REPERTORY
All the performances will be open to the public. All works on each contestant's programs must be performed from memory without pepeat. The performance order is free in the first and second rounds. The jury will have the right to interrupt a performance if its duration exceeds the maximum time allowed for each round.

 

Repertory for the Adult category

 

First Round:
Contestants must play (1), (2), and (3). Duration of total performance must not exceed 25 minutes.
(1) One Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach
(2) One Etude chosen from Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, or Prokofiev
(3) One work by Chopin chosen from Ballades, Barcarolle, Fantasy in f minor , Polonaises or Scherzi.

Second Round:
Contestants must play (1), (2), (3), and (4). No works performed in the First Round may be included.
Duration of total performance must not exceed 50 minutes.
(1) A complete sonata by Beethoven (Op.109, Op.110, or Op.111), Schubert, Liszt, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, or Prokofiev.
(2) One complete set of Mazurkas by Chopin
(3) One work by any composer from either the Impressionist or Modern period
(4) An obligatory work by a Taiwanese composer (4-5 minutes); the score will be sent to each contestant one month before the Competition.

Final Round:
Contestants must choose one of the following Piano Concertos:
Beethoven No.4 in G major
Chopin No.1 in e minor , No.2 in f minor
Prokofiev No.3 in C major
Rachmaninoff No.3 in d minor
Tchaikovsky No.1 in b flat minor

 

Repertory for the Youth category


First Round:
Contestants must play (1), (2), and (3). Duration of total performance must not exceed 20 minutes.
(1) A work by one of the following composers: J.S. Bach, Scarlatti, or Couperin
(2) One etude by Chopin, chosen from Op.10 or Op.25
(3) The first movement from one of the sonatas by Clementi, Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven

Second Round:
Contestants must play (1), (2), and (3). No works performed in the First Round may be included.
Duration of total performance must not exceed 25 minutes.
(1) A work by Chopin, chosen from Polonaises, Waltzes , Scherzi or Ballades.
(2) A work by any composer from either the Impressionism or Modern period
(3) An obligatory work by a Taiwanese composer (3-4 minutes); the score will be sent to each contestant one month before the Competition.

Final Round:
Contestants must choose the first movement from one of the following Piano Concertos:
Chopin No.1 in e minor, No.2 in f minor
Grieg a-minor Op.16
Mendelssohn No.1 in g minor
Schumann in a minor Op.54

V. PRIZES

Adult category
First Prize:      20,000 US

Special Prize: for the best performace of Taiwanese composition 3,000 US Dollars

 

Youth category
First Prize:      5,000 US Dollars
Second Prize:   4,000 US Dollars

Special Prize: for the best performace of Taiwanese composition 3,000 US Dollars


VI. POLICY
1. The jury will be chaired by Prof. Anna Azusa Fujita. Its members will be the internationally renowned musicians. The composition of the jury may vary from one round to another. The jury's decisions are final.

2. The organizer, The Frederic Chopin Foundation of Taipei, will have unlimited rights for (a) organizing any concerts for any contestants; (b) recording of the cmpetition's sessions for radio and television broadcasts; (c) making audio and video tapes, films and other recordings, and showing performance excerpts on the Internet and other data networks; (d) releasing and selling any audio and audiovisual recordings as well as any photographs taken in the competition. The contestants will have no right to make any claims, financial or otherwise, to any of the items mentioned in this paragraph.

VII. TRAVELS AND ACCOMMODATIONS
The Competition organizer will reserve low-cost hotels for contestants wishing to stay in a hotel at their own expense. Contestants will pay their own fares to and from Taipei. Upon written application, financial assistance may be provided to contestants not residing in Taiwan. Taiwanese contestants who are studying abroad must submit an official certificate of attendance issued by the foreign institution.
Contestants requiring a visa for Taiwan must obtain it themselves at their own expense.
Travel Grants:
- from Central and South America to Taipei: USD 500
- from Europe (including Scandinavia and Russia) to Taipei: USD 400
- from North America (Canada and USA) to Taipei: USD 300
- from Asia to Taipei: USD 200
